 Ways to Combat Test Anxiety

Ways to Combat Test Anxiety

The stakes are higher than ever before when it comes to college admissions. With each freshman class surpassing the one before, it’s clear that students have to work significantly harder in order to get admitted into their top university, or even their top ten. This in turn leads to a high level of test anxiety for many students throughout the nation.

Test anxiety is a psychological state in which the person experiencing it feels stress and anxiety during testing situations, which in turn can affect learning and impact test performance. If you or someone you know is suffering from test anxiety, here are some ways to combat it in order to improve not only grades but your mental health, too:

Seek counseling

If you are suffering from test anxiety, this likely means that you have deeper-rooted levels of anxiety that need to be dealt with. Test anxiety can affect major parts of your life including school, and relationships with family, friends, and even yourself. You don’t have to seek counseling from a professional; you can talk to a trusted adult or friend, but it is recommended to speak to a professional if this alone doesn’t help you. Of course, a professional will be able to guide you and help you in a more specific manner and the results will likely be more noticeable.

Don’t burn yourself out

It’s important to not burn yourself out whilst studying. Oftentimes, when you overstudy (yes, you can study too much!) you start to forget the information that you have learned. It’s important to be able to manage your time correctly and create a routine when it comes to studying in order to not overdo it.

Be well prepared

Test anxiety can sometimes stem from not being fully prepared. Make sure to study all the material that you need to the fullest extent, whether for a quiz, exam or a college admissions test such as the SAT or the ACT. If nothing else helps, knowing that you are fully prepared will ease the level of stress that you are under. Nothing is worse than going into a test or exam and knowing that you aren’t equipped with the knowledge that you need in order to do well.

Take time to relax

A great way to not burn out is to take time for yourself. You need to allocate the time to relax and wind down, so your brain can relax and you can recuperate for the next day and/or studying period. This can help a lot with levels of anxiety as you are giving your brain a chance to slow down. Spend time with family or friends, watch a movie, take a walk. Do things that make you calm and happy, and create a good balance in your life.

Practice timed tests

A lot of test anxiety derives from the time limitations associated with tests and exams. Try using practice timed tests in order to practice being under a time constraint before the actual test/exam. This will help you to manage your time correctly and how to work better under pressure.

Seek tutoring services

A great way to reduce levels of test anxiety is to utilize a tutor. A tutor can help you study for your homework, tests, exams, and more. They can give you the reassurance you need so that you don’t have to do it all on your own, and can correct mistakes in real-time. There are now online tutoring services, so you don’t even have to leave your house to have access to a tutor, and you aren’t limited by location. If you have test anxiety, a tutor will greatly help to eliminate that worry.
