Ways to Balance School and Extracurricular Activities

Balancing school and extracurricular activities can be a lot to handle. In high school, most students spend their time at school and then have some sort of activity after. Extracurriculars can range from debate and yearbook to more involved activities like varsity athletics and cheerleading. With extracurricular activities comes to the responsibility of time management skills.
Depending on what type of extracurriculars you do also plays a big role in how you can balance them. If you participate in something like theater or dance, it is usually easier because they don’t require you to be there all the time. If on the other hand, you are a varsity athlete, you may need to figure out a more complex schedule to keep your schoolwork and sports in balance. Talking with your coaches, teachers, and guidance counselors can also help. Usually, they will be supportive and help you brainstorm ways to stay on top of your schedule.

Scheduling is very important. Scheduling is the first and in many ways the most important part of creating a balanced life, no matter what extracurricular activities you participate in. Start by having a clear weekly plan that specifies when you have to be at your extracurriculars and map out details of assignments that are due or exams that need to be studied for that week. Some weeks, you may have to micromanage your schedule due to major exams, projects, or major extracurricular events. Adding these events to your calendar so you do not forget about important due dates or practices is important.

Checking in with yourself

It’s important to take breaks so that you don’t burn out. Some weeks you may need to fit in more downtime in order to not get overwhelmed by your busy schedule. If you are struggling to find the balance, it may be a good idea to seek out help and support.
