How Physics is Defined
Physics is the study of matter and energy. The core of physics is the three Newtonian laws: an object in a state of uniform motion will remain in that state of motion unless acted on by an outside force, force is equal to the mass of an object multiplied by its acceleration, and every action has an equal and opposite reaction. These laws form the basis for the conservation of energy which states that energy cannot be created nor destroyed, only converted from one form to another.
The conservation of energy is why roller coasters can operate without motors continuously propelling them forward! Each drop is strategically lower than the first, which allows the potential energy a ride has at the top to become kinetic energy with heart-pumping speed and turns. Sadly, energy losses due to friction mean that no ride can have hills as high as the first without mechanical assistance in the form of a conveyor or motor. Ride designers must carefully study the physics of their roller coaster to maximize safety. This is because of acceleration, or how fast your speed is changing.
Most people have heard the phrase “G force” before. A G force is the mass of an object multiplied by the constant acceleration of gravity, 9.81 meters per second squared. It is what every person experiences during a freefall. The use of motors and rotation allows riders to experience G forces greater than 1. While this provides the adrenaline rush riders love, engineers must be careful as every increase means a rider’s heart must work harder for that time period due to their blood feeling heavier from the temporary increase in gravitational force.
Tutoring for All Levels
Why Get Tutoring for Physics?
Most engineering students have never taken a formal physics class before Physics I in their freshman year of college. While it is not a requirement to do well, the rapid pace of collegiate physics courses favors those who have already been introduced to the subject. Furthermore, the nature of physics makes memorizing solutions impossible.
At Miles Smart Tutoring, we are equipped with highly trained and educated individuals who can prepare students to hit the ground running on their first day of class. For any students currently enrolled in physics, we can provide one on one guidance to help you excel in your class whether it is an introductory middle school elective or undergraduate critical tracking. All students will learn effective problem-solving techniques to optimize their time on exams and apply theory to real world problems.
As a student advances through physics, they’ll learn about motion, statics, kinematics, fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, circuits, and electricity. The subject of physics is heavily intertwined with calculus and matrix operations. However, it is possible to learn the vital theories without knowing multivariable calculus. Physics acts as the backbone for aerospace, civil, computer, electrical, and mechanical engineers. Career applications include bridge construction, engine functionality, and preventing catastrophic failure in manufactured items. Practical applications a physics student may do at home include popsicle stick bridge competitions, building a wheatstone bridge to act as a strain gauge, or attending a theme park on Physics Day December 6 to see what theoretical values feel like.
Enrolling in prep classes can also mitigate the worst-case scenario: realizing a subject area is not for that student after the semester starts. Due to minimal, if any, exposure to physics prior to their first semester, many students decide against studying engineering after realizing they’d hate to spend the next four years learning about each facet of physics. This isn’t without spending thousands of dollars on the course and dedicating ten hours each week to physics rather than focusing on classes they are eager to continue progressing in. Enrolling in prep classes will not only allow students to get a head start before the semester starts, it will save time and money in the future should a student decide it’s not the right path for them.
