You may have decent grades and think that getting a tutor isn’t necessary. On the other hand, you may not have the best grades and feel too nervous to ask for help.
You might be asking yourself: “Is getting a tutor really worth it?”
Here are some of the reasons why getting a tutor is worth the time and investment, no matter what type of student you are:
1) Tutoring can help with an overload of homework
If homework is becoming a bit overwhelming, getting a tutor can help you to manage the load. A tutor can take you step by step and make comprehending the topic more straightforward and less time consuming as opposed to doing it all on your own. You are much more likely to receive a higher grade on your homework as well as a greater level of understanding with a tutor assisting you.
2) Improvement of grades
Utilizing a tutor will often improve grades since the help is 1:1 (or if it’s a group tutor, the student-teacher ratio is smaller thus providing more attention than in a regular classroom). More often than not, a student will not do well in a class because of lack of comprehension of the topic and will be nervous to speak up and ask for help. This is understandable, but can do great harm to grades and therefore a student’s overall future. Being behind in a course can not only affect the grade of that class, but can be a prerequisite for another course which will continue the cycle of being behind. By reaching out for help and having a tutor to help you early on, you can greatly improve your chances of getting a higher grade and thus have a greater level of understanding.
3) Increasing motivation
Having a tutor can greatly increase motivation. It’s easy to get burnt out when you spend 8 hours a day at school, participate in extracurriculars and have 2+ hours of homework waiting for you when you get home. By having a tutor, you have a motivational ‘cheerleader’ who is encouraging you to do your best whilst assisting you with any help you need. This takes a lot of stress off of your shoulders knowing that you have someone who is there to help you.
4) Encourages higher levels of learning
By having a tutor, this encourages a student to pursue higher levels of learning. Oftentimes students do not pursue higher education because they did not enjoy school or did not do well academically. This is usually due to the fact that in a classroom setting of around 20 other students, not every student is at the same academic level but they must all go at the same pace. This leaves some students behind, not because they are incapable in any way, but because they need to go at their own pace. By having a tutor, you get that one-on-one attention that you need and you get to go at your own speed, making it a more valuable learning experience.
5) Even if you aren’t struggling, tutoring can be beneficial
Even if you feel that you’re not struggling in school and you’re getting good grades, tutoring can still be extremely beneficial to you. There is always room to learn even if you are a straight A student. College is an entirely different setting to high school, and by having a tutor, this can help to prepare you for the college learning environment. You can also receive tutoring for the SAT and the ACT college preparation exams that most people cannot fully master by just studying on their own. Utilizing a tutor who specializes in SAT and ACT test preparation can be a huge advantage, especially since both exams can be a large determinant of where you go to college and whether you receive grants and/or scholarships. The benefits of a tutor are endless, even if you feel like you don’t need one.
Whether you are struggling in school or not, receiving tutoring can be a huge benefit to students and can prepare them for future success in high school, college, and beyond.
