Biology is the study of living organisms, including their chemical processes, physical structure, molecular interactions, physiological mechanisms, development, and evolution. What is LIFE?

Life is a characteristic that distinguishes physical entities that have biological processes with those that do not possess these processes. These fundamental processes include functions like respiration, growth, reproduction, consumption of food, etc. All living beings are collectively known as living organisms. The most primitive form of living organisms includes bacteria, whereas humans belong to the most advanced group. There are certain anomalies to living and non-living categorization like a virus, which is a microorganism having characteristics of both. So, there are exceptions in biology as well, like many other subjects.

Cell: The basic unit of life 

As discussed earlier, a cell is the basic building block of every living organism. The cell is the simplest structure that itself has the potential to sustain life. While life has long evolved into multi-cellular organisms, the majority of life on Earth still remains as single-celled organisms. These single-cell organisms, like Bacteria and fungi, possess an ability to survive even in harsh climates.

Cells can be categorized into one of two broad categories: prokaryotic and eukaryotic. The single-celled organisms like the bacteria are classified as prokaryotes (pro = before; karyon = nucleus). Animal cells, plant cells, fungi are classified as eukaryotes (eu = true). The critical difference between the two types of cellular structures, therefore, is that eukaryotic cells have a nucleus containing the DNA of the cell and specialized structures called organelles. Organelles perform unique roles such as photosynthesis and development of proteins. The DNA is not encapsulated inside a nucleus in the case of prokaryotic cells, so the organelles are also absent.


What are Genes?

Genes are the basis of inheritance. They provide all the information required by an organism for its survival. As species reproduce, this information is passed down from the parent to their offspring. So, genes are the reason why kids look similar to their parents. In biology, there is a separate branch known as Genetics, which is concerned with the study of genes, genetic variation, and heredity in organisms. 

The Theory of Evolution

It is an accepted notion that the theory of evolution by natural selection provides by far the best explanation for the vast diversity of organisms on our planet. The phenomenon of natural selection has been sculpting life for over 4 billion years and is the foundation of modern biology. The natural selection of favorable traits from generation to generation guides species evolution over long periods of time. Evolution, assisted by genetic mutations, has powered the survival of life in almost any climate on the Earth. This evolutionary cycle is evident in all aspects of life.

What are the different fields of Biology?

Although biology consists of a huge array of branches, some of the main branches include botany, ecology, evolution, marine biology, genetics, medicine, microbiology, molecular biology, physiology, and zoology. Moreover, a field of biology may be primarily concerned with the in-depth study of one particular kind of living organism, like the study of birds in ornithology, the study of microorganisms in microbiology, or the study of fishes in ichthyology. The subdivision of biology into different branches or fields is done to increase the convenience to study a particular part of this subject in detail. Some new branches also have evolved around in recent years like Population biology, which deals with groups or populations of organisms inhabiting a particular region.  

These branches of biology, like genetics, ecology, and evolution, are themselves very broad and contain many specializations within them. For example, an ecologist, who looks at how organisms interact with each other and the environment, has so many different options to study like plant ecology, population ecology, or freshwater ecology. So, as discussed earlier, biology is a very vast subject, and it is necessary to discover a particular area of interest for a better understanding of the world around us. 

Many new developments have taken place in recent years in the field of biology. From 3D printing of new organs using stem cells to customizing patient drug treatments, some remarkable achievements have already taken place in the last decade. Moreover, as the recent developments are going on, and our understanding is also growing, the coming decades may completely transform our thinking to a new level.
