What is the GRE?
The GRE exam is the Graduate school qualification test, similar to the SAT for undergraduate studies. The test is composed of six total sections: One analytical writing section, two verbal reasoning sections with 20 questions each, two quantitative reasoning sections with 20 questions each, and an unscored research section in which future questions are tested on students with no impact on their score. Writing is scored from 0 to 6, the verbal reasoning sections are graded 130-170, and the two quantitative reasoning sections are scored from 130-170. The test can be
taken on a computer or on paper.
Each section focuses on specific skill sets which are required if a student wishes to pursue graduate education. The verbal reasoning section asks questions designed to test reading comprehension, the ability to fill in words or phrases which make a text coherent given the information which follows the blank, and sentence equivalence problems. The quantitative reasoning section tests topics such as high school and college math, data analysis, geometric figures, and coordinate systems.
How Tutoring Helps
It is highly recommended that students who will be taking the GRE take prep classes. These classes not only explain methods to answer each of the different types of questions that will be tested on the exam but also impart strategies students should use to determine the correct answer if they are unable to solve the problem outright. These strategies and skills are extremely useful outside of the test and have tremendous carryover value into all other school subjects as well as future job interviews and assessments.
For example, many of the questions are similar to SAT style math questions but with advanced concepts. This means the same test-taking skills used for SAT tests can be applied to the GRE, however the verbal reasoning section is not as similar as the math section.
Future Impact of Tutoring
While we employ a variety of methodologies and strategies, we emphasize the Socratic method as it helps students think through the logic of each question to find the answers. This method of teaching has future ramifications as it carries over to future classes and helps develop self-reliance amongst students. The strategies we teach for test taking have a large carryover to all other tests taken as well as job interviews.
